USAID Memorial Arlington

A grassroots effort to honor those who served humanity

What started as a seemingly insignificant gesture among friends has become something much more meaningful. When USAID was suddenly shut down, we knew we had to do something to honor the legacy of an agency that served not just our country, but humanity everywhere.

We're now petitioning Arlington County to make this memorial official. Whether at this traffic circle or another appropriate location, we believe there should be a permanent memorial to honor those who served with USAID.

This small traffic circle represents so much more than its size suggests.Like the 0.3% of the federal budget that went to USAID, this circle is tiny. But the impact of the agency's work was immeasurable. Located just south of the National Foreign Affairs Training Center, where all USAID Foreign Service Officers trained, this location holds special significance. The agency's memorial wall honored 99 people who made the ultimate sacrifice. But beyond those names, countless others sacrificed comfort, safety, and time to make the world better. Foreign Service Officers, implementing partners, contractors, and local staff all gave something of themselves in service to others. This circle now stands as our monument to the dedication, care, and compassion that all USAID workers have for their fellow human beings. It represents determination, hope, and values that cannot be taken away.
